Local SEO and Google Business Profile: a guide to standing out on maps.

SEO
8 min read

When someone types “plumber near me” or “breakfast in Beşiktaş” on their phone, they see a map and three businesses at the top of the results. Most clicks go to those three businesses. Local SEO is the work of becoming one of those three.

In this guide we explain how Google ranks local results, how to set up and strengthen your Google Business Profile step by step, what is allowed and what is forbidden with reviews, and how your website contributes to local visibility. We don’t skip a detail specific to Türkiye either: Yandex Maps.

If you’re unfamiliar with the general logic of SEO, we recommend first reading our article What is SEO; here we focus directly on the local side.

What is local SEO, and who is it important for?

Local SEO is the work that makes a business visible in searches made in a specific area, especially on Google Maps and in the map box in search results (the local pack). The difference from classic SEO is that location and the business profile are decisive here.

For two types of business, it is a direct revenue issue:

  • Those with a physical location: restaurants, cafés, clinics, hairdressers, shops, hotels, car services. Customers come to your door.
  • Service-area businesses: plumbers, electricians, cleaning companies, removal firms, property management companies. You go to the customer’s address.

Local searches are usually very close to a purchase decision. Someone typing “pharmacy near me” doesn’t want to read an article; they want directions or to call. That is why local visibility can bring direct calls and visits even with few site visits.

How does Google rank local results? Three signals

Google Business Profile’s help page states clearly that local results are mainly determined by three factors: relevance, distance and prominence (popularity).

SignalWhat does it measure?Your control
RelevanceHow well your profile matches what is being searched forHigh: category, description, services, products, complete information
DistanceHow far the business is from the searcherLow: you can’t change your address; you can define your service area correctly
ProminenceHow well known the business isMedium: number and rating of reviews, links to your site, mentions online

Google makes two important notes on the same page: it is not possible to request or pay for a better local ranking; and more reviews and positive ratings can contribute to local ranking. In other words, in local SEO you don’t get ahead by “buying a package”; the profile is strengthened through effort.

Realistic expectations: Because of the distance signal, it is hard to rank highly in searches from the other side of the city. Your goal is to be the strongest profile in the area you serve.

How do you set up a Google Business Profile step by step?

The profile is free and is created with your Google account at business.google.com. The most common setup mistakes are:

  • 1. Business name — Use your real name as it appears on your sign and invoices. Adding keywords, as in “Ahmet Usta Boiler Service Cheapest 24/7”, violates Google’s guidelines and can lead to the profile being suspended.
  • 2. Primary category — Choose the single category that best describes your business, then add a small number of additional categories. Categories are among the most influential fields for ranking; but under the guidelines they can’t be stuffed like keywords.
  • 3. Address or service area — If you have an address where you receive customers, enter it. If you go to customers, hide the address and define a service area by district and city. Virtual offices and PO box addresses aren’t suitable for a profile.
  • 4. Phone, website, opening hours — Also enter special hours for religious and public holidays; appearing “open” on a day you’re closed is the fastest route to bad reviews.
  • 5. Verification — Google offers different methods depending on the business; most often a short video showing the business and its sign is requested. An unverified profile doesn’t appear properly in local results.
  • 6. Description, services and products — Explain what you do and where you serve in your customers’ language. Don’t put links or discount announcements in the description; these are restricted by the guidelines.

Only one profile can be created per business. Opening a second profile at the same address, or separate fake profiles for each district, is among the most common reasons for suspension.

Google reviews: how to get more reviews and what to watch out for

Reviews affect both ranking and the decision to click. A customer choosing between a business rated 4.8 with reviews last month and one rated 3.9 whose latest review was two years ago knows which to pick.

What’s allowed

  • Asking every customer who has received your service to share their experience, whether positive or negative
  • Adding your profile’s “ask for reviews” link or QR code to invoices, business cards, emails and WhatsApp messages
  • Replying to every review, especially negative ones, politely and with a focus on solutions

What’s forbidden

The Google Maps contribution policy explicitly prohibits fake engagement. Don’t:

  • Offer discounts, gifts, free products or services in exchange for reviews
  • Ask only satisfied customers for reviews or try to block negative reviews
  • Require customers to leave a rating while on the premises, or set review quotas for employees
  • Have employees, relatives or paid services write reviews
Warning: Google can delete fake reviews in bulk and add a warning to the profile. Hundreds of reviews gained through shortcuts can destroy in a day the trust built by genuine reviews over years.

Keeping the profile alive: photos, posts, questions

Google lists adding photos and videos to your profile among its recommended steps. Real photos of the exterior, the interior, your team, your products and completed work are far more convincing than stock images. An exterior photo also makes it easier for first-time customers to find you.

Although posts (campaigns, events, news) don’t raise rankings directly, they show that the profile is up to date and give customers one more reason. A few posts a month are enough for a regular rhythm.

Attributes, services and products

The “attributes” field in the profile is a small but effective detail: options such as wheelchair access, parking, Wi-Fi, service by appointment and card payment make you more relevant in searches by customers who care about these details. In the services section, add not just your main service but the sub-services customers search for individually. For a dental clinic, listing “implants”, “teeth whitening” and “paediatric dentistry” separately gives each a chance to match a separate search.

Also remember: it’s not just you who can change the information in the profile; users can also change it by suggesting edits. Check your profile once a month and correct changes such as wrong hours, a “closed” flag or an incorrect phone number.

Your website’s role in local SEO and NAP consistency

The profile alone isn’t enough; Google also checks whether the site the profile links to is relevant and trustworthy. For a website that is strong in local search:

  • NAP consistency: Your business Name, Address and Phone should be written in exactly the same way on your site, your profile, your social media accounts and industry directories. Differences such as “St.” versus “Street”, or old and new phone numbers, weaken trust.
  • Service and location pages: Write a separate page for each of your services. If you have several branches, create a separate page for each branch with its address, hours, map and team. Hundreds of copied pages where only the district name changes, however, count as spam.
  • Structured data: Use LocalBusiness schema markup to tell Google your address, phone and opening hours in machine-readable form. The markup must match the information shown on the page.
  • Mobile and speed: Most local searches are made on phones. One-tap call and directions buttons and fast-loading pages are essential.

You can find all of these technical details in our technical SEO checklist. For multi-branch businesses working on local pages, rather than a ready-made template, a website designed around your needs is usually a more flexible solution.

Don’t skip Yandex Maps and other platforms

A significant share of search traffic in Türkiye goes to Yandex; according to Statcounter data for September 2026, Yandex’s search share in Türkiye is about 25 percent. Creating a free listing in Yandex’s own business directory (Yandex Business) and filling it with the same NAP information means extra visibility for little effort.

For iPhone users, you can manage your Apple Maps listing with Apple Business Connect. Industry-specific listings such as navigation and taxi apps and food and booking platforms should be kept up to date on the same principle: one correct set of information, everywhere.

In local SEO, the strongest signal is a business where customers find the same, correct information everywhere.

Measuring results and local visibility in AI search

The Business Profile performance screen shows how many times your profile was viewed, which searches you were found through, and how many calls, direction requests and website clicks you received. Track these monthly. Adding a UTM parameter to the website link in your profile lets you see this traffic separately in Google Analytics.

Local information matters on the AI side too. Google’s AI features document lists keeping Business Profile information up to date among its core recommendations for good visibility. When long, natural questions such as “a quiet café for families with children in Kadıköy” are asked in AI Mode, the answers draw on profile information, the wording in reviews and the content on your site. A detailed service list and genuine reviews describing customers’ experiences give you an advantage here too.

If showing up on maps takes time and you need calls right away, local ads can be a short-term bridge. For when advertising makes sense and when organic investment does, see Google Ads or SEO.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile paid?

No. Creating, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile is free. Google also states that local ranking can’t be improved by paying; ads in map results are a separate paid service and are labelled as ads.

Can I register on Google Maps without an address?

Yes. If you provide services by going to customers’ addresses, you can register as a service-area business, hide your address and specify the districts and cities you serve. Virtual offices and PO box addresses, however, aren’t considered suitable for a profile.

Do Google reviews affect ranking?

Yes. According to Google’s help page, more reviews and positive ratings can contribute to a business’s prominence signal. Replying to reviews is also recommended. However, offering discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews and collecting fake reviews violate the guidelines.

Why does my competitor rank above me on maps?

It’s usually one of three reasons: the competitor is closer to the searcher, their profile is more complete and their category more accurate, or they have more and more recent reviews. You can’t change distance, but you can strengthen your profile information, your flow of reviews and your website.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

The verification method varies by business; most often a short video showing the business is requested, and the review can take a few days. Avoiding frequent changes to your information during the review prevents the process from dragging on.

Final word

The formula for local SEO isn’t complicated: a verified, complete profile, a steady flow of reviews within the rules, the same contact details everywhere and a website that genuinely answers local searches. Setting these up once and checking them monthly is the surest way to hold your place on the maps.
